Corporate Sustainability Presentation by Amari Roskelly, LEED AP at Jacobs Engineering

Amari Roskelly, the LEED AP and Sustainability Coordinator at Jacobs Engineering came to talk to our class about Sustainability.

She began by discussing that sustainability involves having responsibility in three areas: Social, Environmental and Economic.  Here is an example of this idea:

Amari works with several project for the US Defense Department.  The military is going "green," and spending a lot of resources to certify many of their facilities as LEED certified.

LEED has been used in the U.S. since 2000, and is the most widely used rating system in the US.  a newer system was established in 2010 in Abu Dhabi, called Estidama, which is growing in popularity around the globe.

In 2007 the Living Building Challenge was established.  It is used internationally, is lesser known but gaining in popularity.  The idea behind the Living Building Challenge is that the building is considered a living environment and should be able to self sustain.  Water should be filtered and reused, electricity should be generated on site, and not rely on the grid, and materials from local sources should be used.

Here is more information for each rating system:

In her work with the Defense Department, Amari gets involved in projects when the planning phase is about 60% complete and consults on the best way to meed sustainability objectives.  One of her projects is Fort Carson.  Here is a link to Fort Carson's Sustainability webpage:

Fort Carson also has the Army's largest solar array, offsetting much of the bases off-grid needs.
